TKPR229 MTH229 - ASTROPOLITICS: COMPARATIVE SPACE POLICIES
Catalogue Description: Geopolitics and astropolitics; evolution of the space race since 1957; intellectual foundations of hegemonic competition; space institutions and legislation of Russia, the United States and China; comparative space capabilities, satellite and rocket systems, spaceports and ground stations; emerging dynamics; Space technology and economy;
In the 21st century, space has become more significant than ever in human history, largely due to the pivotal role that space-based systems and applications—driven by technological advancements—play in our daily lives. Furthermore, space offers immense opportunities and power to those capable of accessing and utilizing it—as evidenced by state investments in high-tech sectors such as rocketry, satellites, and information technology—thereby becoming a new arena of hegemonic competition among nations. This course examines the dynamics of this hegemonic competition within the context of astropolitics. In this framework, the space-related activities of the United States, Russia, and China—nations defined as "Space Powers"—will be analyzed. The objective is to provide key analytical tools that facilitate an understanding of the competition unfolding in space and encourage reflection on future possibilities.
